Williamson County Sun, Oct. 4, 2009: AUSTIN — Williamson County District Attorney John Bradley will serve as the state’s newest chairman of the Texas Forensic Science Commission.

Governor Rick Perry tapped Bradley to replace Austin defense attorney Sam Bassett as head of the commission Wednesday, just days before the commission was set to meet in Dallas to review a controversial arson case that led to the 2004 execution of a Corsicana man. Continue reading

Couple charged in death tried to ‘rid infant of demons’

Longview News-Journal, Dec. 4, 2008: HENDERSON — Tattered clothing, three hungry dogs and trash strewn across the front porch are all that remained Wednesday of a crime scene so gruesome that some Rusk County law enforcement officials are seeking psychological help.

Blaine Keith Milam and 2008 Longview High graduate Jesseca Bain Carson, both 18, remained in jail Wednesday on $2 million bond each. The couple are charged with capital murder in the Tuesday morning bludgeoning of Carson’s daughter, Amora Bain Carson. Continue reading

Long waits the norm for area mental health

Longview News-Journal, May 14, 2009: LONGVIEW — It’s the same response Gail McBride gives day in and day out as office manager for Wendy J. Burke and Associates, a Longview psychiatry firm: “We’re not taking any new patients.”

It’s a response she doesn’t like giving.

“It’s difficult because we’re backed up,” McBride said. “They can’t understand that because they really want help, but we’re totally booked up.”

Texas faces a critical shortage of mental health professionals, and with the state’s rapid and diverse population growth, mental health experts say the shortage will continue without more state participation. Continue reading

Oil and gas experts predict oil, gas prices to spike in 2010

Longview News-Journal, Oct. 3, 2009: CARTHAGE—Dozens of drilling rigs, trucks and extraction tools sit idle in what some locals call the “gas graveyard” along a northeast section of Loop 436, leaving officials worried about one of the leading industries in East Texas.

“I’ve never seen it this bad,” City Manager Brenda Samford said. “This time last year, many of those same yards were empty because companies were drilling everywhere. It would make my job easier if those times were to return.”

That return might be soon.

Oil and gas economists project gas prices will rebound from record lows by early 2010, which could eventually spawn another drilling boom across the region. Continue reading
